CONTENT CHECK:

Monday, March 9, 2015

Good morning and welcome back!

Today is a minimum day.

Please grab your notebooks as you come in and have out your brainstorming HW!!

Here is today's agenda:

1. Warm up: in the "My Poetry" section of your notebook, brainstorm a list of FIVE people you could address your letter to.

2. Activity:  today you are going to work on your letter rough draft. This may be done in the "My Poetry" section of your notebook.

Before you begin, decide what TONE you want to create in your letter-sad, happy, reflective, distant, angry.

Paragraph 1: begin your letter by sharing the background of your memory (when, where, and with whom did it occur). Explain why this memory is important/special to you.

Paragraphs 2-3: using SENSORY DETAILS, describe that memory to me using your sense of sight, taste, touch, and smell.

Your sensory details need to SHOW me not TELL me what it is you remember from that memory. Don't just tell me the sun looked yellow-what kind of yellow? Bright like a sunflower? Yellow like wildfire? BE CREATIVE.

HW: Complete your rough draft and BRING YOUR NOTEBOOKS BACK TOMORROW.

Thursday, March 5, 2015

Hello English 1 students!

Please grab your poetry notebooks as you come in and open to your Imagery Chart from yesterday!

Here is today's agenda:

1. Warm up: in your "My Poetry" section, please respond to the following:

-Write about a strong memory you have, it can be a happy one or sad one. How often do you think of this memory? Why is it special to you? What feelings do you get from this memory?

ONE PARAGRAPH, be prepared to share!!

2. Poetry Reading, Memory by Margaret Walker

Background: Walker was a poet and novelist and is considered a legend of African American literature. Her writing focused on the experiences and hardships of African Americans.

Words to know:

-Sinister: threatening harm, ominous
-Felts: felt hats
-Parasols: a Victorian era style umbrella

In the "Poetry Notes" section of your notebook, make a chart like the one I have on the board. As we read through the poem, we are going to record what types of sensory imagery are used in the poem.

Once we are done reading, you will respond to the Review and Assess Questions 1, 2a, 2b, and 4. Write in complete sentences.

After you finish responding to the questions, read the poem again and complete a quick sketch of what image comes to mind when you read the poem.

THIS SHOULD BE COMPLETED AT THE END OF THE PERIOD AND WILL BE YOUR TICKET OUT THE DOOR.

HW: You are going to write a short letter about a memorable moment. Over the weekend, I want you to brainstorm. On a separate sheet of paper, make four boxes.

Box 1: list possible memorable moments you can write about (it can be a big memory or small one)
Box 2: list sensory details from that memory that appealed to your sense of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell
Box 3: explain why this memory is important to you
Box 4: list when, where, and with whom the memory occurred.

DUE: MONDAY

Reminders:

Monday is a minimum day!

Wednesday, March 4, 2015

Hello English 1 students!

Please have your homework out so that I can stamp it!

Here is today's agenda:

1. Warm up: in the "My Poetry" section of your notebooks, use SENSORY DETAILS to describe to me your favorite kind of fruit.

2. Four Corners Imagery

Before we begin, please turn to your "Poetry Notes" section and make a chart like the one on my paper.

In your groups, you will go around to each corner of the room and read the poem. You need to pick TWO images (remember, the image needs to appeal to one of your FIVE senses) from each poem and fill out the chart except for the column "How you pictured it."  MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE ENOUGH SPACE FOR YOUR DRAWINGS

Once everyone has rotated around to each of the poems, we will return to our seats. Now, you will complete the "How you pictured it" part of the chart. Make your drawings thoughtful, show me what you pictured when you came across that image from the poem.

HW: If you do not finish the chart, finish it for homework. It will be DUE THURSDAY.

PARAGRAPHS: 2 (5-7 sentence paragraphs) DUE: WEDNESDAY

Monday, March 2, 2015

Hello English 1 students!

Here is today's agenda:

1. Warm Up: read the WHOLE poem and write down the rhyme scheme

The Road Not Taken

BY ROBERT FROST
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

2. Review "Lonely as a Cloud"

3. Describe a natural scene:

Think of your favorite outdoor place or some place you have been on vacation. You are going to write your own description.

-First, jot down details you remember from that scene (what did you see, smell, hear?)
-Decide whether your description will be a poem or a few paragraphs
-Write three paragraphs describing your natural scene.
